Restaurant Wars pt. 1

This quarter, Emmarose's group will be examining the essential question, What is the relationship between the producer and the consumer?

While many producer/consumer relationships are focused on products, Emmarose's group will be exploring how experiences can also be produced and consumed.

-What makes a good experience for you?

-How do we take in an experience through all five of our senses?

-How do we create an enjoyable experience for consumers?

Students will be working in teams to design an experience, more specifically... a restaurant!

The theme was kicked off with a special episode of Top Chef Jr. "Restaurant Wars." Over the course of the next 8 weeks, students will research what is involved in creating a restaurant, how to brand and design their restaurant, and how to create a complete menu. They will visit a restaurant where students can take notes and collect information on the what they enjoyed about the experience, the food, and the layout and design of the environment. At the end of our unit, students will pitch their restaurant ideas to a panel of surprise judges.

During this unit students will explore most, if not all, of the following:

  • Persuasive writing

  • Logo design

  • Branding concepts

  • The importance of collaboration and communication in a team

  • Introduction to perimeter and area when creating blueprints of their restaurants

  • 3D model building

  • Introduction to culinary terms when designing menus

  • Introduction to money when pricing items on their menus

  • Presenting to an audience (public speaking)
